A Look Inside

In April of 1982, Sidetrack Chicago debuted on a section along North Halsted Street, which was only then being “found” by the community in Chicago. Apart from other businesses, Sidetrack added something unique to the area: a music video pub.

As the phenomenon of video bars grew across the country, Sidetrack’s innovative in-house tape editing improved. The number of patrons increased, the length of the line out the door raised, and the bar’s space expanded to accommodate the influx of new customers. Meanwhile, the expansion of LGBT community activism prevailed, mirrored by Sidetrack Chicago’s success; the bar’s owners, patrons, and staff were all instrumental in this movement.

When it first began, Sidetrack had already been around for 25 years. Over the years, this Chicago record store has sponsored many activist exhibitions and donated incalculable money, goods, and services.

Not just that, Sidetrack Chicago has been coordinating donations well to NGC (Northside Grocery Center), serving AIDS patients since 1988.
