Origin of Salt Shed Chicago

It has been more than four years since the Morton Salt building’s revitalization was declared. Many folks have already had their eye on the granitic rooftop mural of the reliable Kennedy Expressway monument ever since.

The first phase of the fantastic Salt Shed Chicago project opened to the public on Tuesday night when the outdoor portion of Salt Shed—the newest Chicago music venue from the team underneath Thalia Hall and the Empty Bottle—hosted its first concert.

Makaya McCraven, a local drummer and bandleader, headlined a jazz-focused bill that featured British saxophonist Nubya Garcia and the final Chicago efficiency by soon-to-be-disbanded avant-garde act Sons of Kemet. While renovation work to the namesake building continues, it is only sponsoring outdoor events for the time being.
